Here is a quick recap of our story so far with Ms. J. –

We received an email a few weeks ago from social services regarding a family in desperate need of help with their home. Living there is Ms. J, a 68 year old grandmother who is undergoing chemotherapy for stomach cancer.  She has custody of her daughter’s 13 year old son and 17 year old daughter.  Ms. J’s other daughter is 45 and disabled, and she and her 3 children (ages 11, 17 and 20 ) are also living in this dilapidated home. I only took pictures in the bathroom, but much of the rest of the house is in similar condition. Even the front door is held shut by a tied towel. Their bathroom is unusable as the toilet has dropped through the floor. Not sure how they are using the bathroom. Their hot water heater hasn’t worked in years so they heat water on the stove to bathe. There is mold growing on the walls inside of the home, roaches and other pests everywhere in the home. Every room of the house needs pretty serious work, but we are starting with the bathroom. This will allow this family to stay in their home. It will also help them all be more healthy.

Please go to the Volunteer Registration page by clicking HERE.  Rainbow International will be in Tuesday and Wednesday doing the demolition and mold remediation. We need volunteers that can help starting on Wednesday 6-15-16. We’ll need some folks to help with the reconstruction of the bathroom, some folks for general cleaning and some folks for exterior clean up and yardwork.

We do construction projects, but ultimately this is a ministry opportunity. An opportunity to show this family and everyone around us that Jesus’ love overcomes ALL obstacles. Everyday, in God’s hands! This is why we do what we do..to restore lives and to show Jesus’ love.

When we learn to trust in what we do not see, we believe in spite of seeing. Then, and only then, will we become, as Jesus said, “Blessed.” That is living by faith. That is trusting that He is the truth.” -Matt Ham

Fundraiser Kick-off

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

Monday, 5-16-16, was the official kickoff for our fundraiser. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by June 1, 2016 so we can purchase and outfit a response trailer. During our fund drive on Monday YOU donated $2098.50! I am just blown away by the support of everyone who has stepped up to help. It far exceeded what I thought we’d raise on the first day.

This trailer will allow our volunteers to deploy quickly. Click To Tweet

This trailer will allow our volunteers to deploy quickly in event of a natural disaster or other emergency to provide help to affected families. The objective is to have the tools and materials necessary to secure their home and be able to make an assessment of needs to return and help complete repairs.

If you would like information on sponsoring this trailer please contact James Roberson at 516projectfxbg (at) gmail.com for details. Your business name/logo would look great!

5-14-16 Workday

We had a great day serving on Saturday 5-14-16.  It has been raining here for what seems like WEEKS, but saturday morning the sun was shining! The day started off at Chancellor Baptist Church with a nice breakfast prepared by the men’s ministry. After breakfast we organized the volunteers into teams and headed out to work for 3 different families.

Project 1 was for Mr. and Mrs. L in Spotsylvania county. Mr. L is disabled and requires a motorized wheelchair to get around. So they needed some help with some home maintenance items. Our volunteers used 5.5 gallons of paint, 80 pounds of concrete mix, 3 roller pads, two disposable paint brushes,  4 gallons of 12.5% bleach and two gallons of Jomax house wash. Cleaned the house siding,  painted the addition to the garage, painted the garage addition metal roof, the metal shed roof, and the back porch metal roof.  We painting the porch trim and the man – door of the garage.  We moved the wood pile and removed a lot of trash and an old trailer.  Even jacked up a building that had settled, and poured concrete under the post.

Project 2 was the start of our work for Ms. J in Caroline County. You may remember the pictures we’ve shared of Ms. J’s bathroom that is falling apart. We were able to do some general cleanup around the house as well as do a more detailed assesment of the crawl space to determine the extent of damage. It looks like we’ll have to gut the entire bathroom, remove and replace 5 or 6 floor joists, then new subfloor, toilet, tub, vanity/sink, drywall and tile floor. This is an ongoing project involving our volunteers, Caroline county as well as several sub-contractors. We’ll do our best to keep you posted on the progress.

Project 3 was for Mr. and Mrs. D in Spotsylvania. The sewer line between their trailer and the septic tank was damaged and causing waste to back up in the home. Our volunteers dug up the line and located the problem. There was a hole in the pipe and a section that was too low. We were able to cut out the bad section and correct the grade. We also added a cleanout to allow easier access for future issues.

We had 15 volunteers perform 67.5 man hours of labor. That's over $1600 worth of donated labor Click To Tweet

Below are some pictures from the day.

Faith through construction

Knowing that families in our community are living in conditions like these is just heartbreaking. We received an email a few days ago from social services regarding a family in desperate need of help with their home. Living there is the 68 year old grandmother who is undergoing chemotherapy for stomach cancer.  She has custody of her daughter’s 13 year old son and 17 year old daughter.  The grandmother’s other daughter is 45 and disabled, and she and her 3 children (ages 11, 17 and 20 ) are also living in this dilapidated home. I only took pictures in the bathroom, but much of the rest of the house is in similar condition. Even the front door is held shut by a tied towel.

Their hot water heater hasn’t worked in years so they heat water on the stove to bathe. There is mold growing on the walls inside of the home, roaches and other pests everywhere in the home. Every room of the house needs pretty serious work.

Unfortunately, other organizations have gone out to assess this home and declined to work on it due the severity of the needs. Honestly, even one of our regular volunteers, after seeing these photos, asked if we could even handle this project. I’ll tell you my response- “Nope. No clue how we’re going to get it done. But I know God is bigger than a busted toilet. Since I found out about this home I’ve been contacted by two contractors that want to help, several people with supplies to donate and received a couple financial donations.” We definitely have a lot more needs to offset to make it happen, but it’s a good start. As this project starts and the overwhelmingness of it sets in, I’m reminded of a recent quote from my friend Matt:

When we learn to trust in what we do not see, we believe in spite of seeing. Then, and only then, will we become, as Jesus said, “Blessed.” That is living by faith. That is trusting that He is the truth.” -Matt Ham

Yes people are actively living in this home. Yes these are our neighbor’s. This is why we do what we do, to help restore lives. Jesus’ love will prevail over hard times. We will have to have faith that it can and will be done and in doing so we glorify Him.

This project will require coordination between government agencies, contractors, several non-profit organizations and volunteers. Not to mention LOTS of materials. If you can help by volunteering or donating it is greatly appreciated. Please keep this family and our work with them in your prayers.

Welcome

516 Project, Inc is a Christian based 501c3 non-profit construction ministry based in Fredericksburg, Va. Founded in 2016. Our ministry shares the love of Jesus with families when disaster strikes. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” At times when people are feeling overwhelmed or defeated by their circumstances we want to be the light in the darkness helping them out of that place.

516 Project Ministry consists of 2 divisions:

Mission FXBG: our mission right here in the Fredericksburg region is to help homeowners in need of home repairs that are unable to afford or have physical barrier to completing the repairs on their own. Through partnership with area churches,  localities and businesses we are able to have our volunteers help these residents by fixing leaky roofs, repairing damaged floors, fixing plumbing, painting, building handicap ramps, yard clean up, house cleaning and so much more.

Disaster Response: Our second focus is disaster relief response in the mid-atlantic region. We are currently working on raising funds to outfit a disaster response unit that will have chainsaws, roof tarping supplies, basic hand tools and basic supplies residents often need after a disaster such as a tornado, flood or hurricane.
