Disaster Relief: Flood Recovery-Buchanan County, Va

516 Project will be serving in Buchanan County, VA from July 19th-25th offering Disaster Relief.  The area has experienced massive floods and many homes have been damaged and destroyed.  We will be doing muck outs-removing mud, debris, flooring, furniture, drywall, etc. from the areas flooded homes.

Lodging will be at a local church (address will be provided after you sign up) and 3 meals each day will be provided.  You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the host church.  Once you have arrived at the church we will carpool to the project site to limit the number of vehicles on the road.  More details will be emailed to you once you are signed up. DISASTER RESPONSE Frequent Questions:

What is the cost to attend?

It is free! We provide the food and lodging. We just ask that you show up with a willing heart to serve. We rely on churches, businesses, individuals, and our volunteers for donations.

 

What are the sleeping arrangements?

We will be staying at our host church. Please bring a cot or air mattress. Lodging will be separated by gender.

 

What should I bring?

  • 516 Project shirt(s) If you do not have one, one will be provided
  • Bible
  • Case of water, work gloves
  • Linens, pillow, blanket, air mattress, cot, sleeping bag
  • Towel, Toiletries

 

Will there be any RV spots available?

No

 

Can I bring my pet?

No

 

Do I have to bring my own food?

No. We will provide 3 meals each day. Typically some snacks are available as well.

 

What kind of work will we be doing?

We will be doing flood muckouts. Removing debris and mud from the inside of homes. Removing damaged furniture and other household items. Removing flooring, drywall, insulation etc. This is physically demanding work.

 

Should we bring tools?

Yes! Please bring any tools that you can, especially those that you would anticipate using for removing debris or mucking out a home (general hand tools, pry bars, shovels, hammers, saws etc) If you have industry specific tools or equipment that you think may help, please contact the site lead first.

 

Can we bring our youth group or our children?

No, during Rapid Response trips we require everyone to be 18 years or older. If you arrive with a child younger than 18, they will not be able to volunteer.

 

What will be a typical day serving with 516 Project?

Breakfast will start at 7am. We will spend time together with a special time of worship and devotion before we head out to help the families. Lunch will be delivered or taken to the job sites by the volunteers. Dinner will begin at 6:00 pm. Lights out is 10pm.

 

What times can we arrive to “check in” to 516 Project and where do we go?

Starting Tuesday July 19th, 2022 you may arrive at the church after 3pm  and every day after and through Monday July 25th, the check-in area will be open from 7:00 am – 8:00 pm. The first meal will be dinner Tuesday July 19th. The last meal will be lunch Monday July 25th. We will conclude the event at noon on the 25th.

 

What else can we do to prepare?

  1. Please pray for the families that were affected and that God would move mightily through His people over the next three weeks.
